Workshop – Quilt As You Go
March 14 @ 9:00 am – 2:00 pm
*** Holly Room at Medford Leas, One Medford Leas Way, Medford, NJ ***
Hoagies will be available.
If you don’t have a longarm quilting machine or aren’t a hand quilter, getting your quilt top actually quilted and ready for binding is becoming more and more expensive. This Quilt as You Go method is one of several where you can quilt each block together with batting and backing individually. Quilted blocks can then be joined together into rows, and rows joined together to complete a full-size quilt. Only one block or one row of blocks will need to pass through the throat of your sewing machine. This method works best for sampler type quilts or quilts which would include sashing where each block is independent of other blocks and is not part of a larger quilt-top pattern.
Requirements for workshop:
- 4 sampler blocks (for the workshop you can use panels or simple blocks of fabric since we are learning the method, not necessarily completing a finished project) NOTE: Blocks should be the same size, 8 ½ x 8 ½ will work well
- Batting cut to the same size as blocks (or just a bit larger to be trimmed to square up block after quilting)
- Backing fabric at least 1 ½” larger than blocks, ex. 10″ x 10″ for 8 ½ ” blocks NOTE: Backing will form the sashing around each block so should coordinate or compliment the blocks
- Zipper foot for joining quilted blocks together (if available)
- The usual sewing notions: rotary cutter, rulers, cutting mat, scissors, pins, thread, etc. NOTE 1: Match thread to backing as it will show on the front of the quilt NOTE 2: Clips will NOT work well to hold sashing in place because blocks will be spread side by side when sewing them together.
I think I’ve included all the necessary requirements. Please add anything else I may have forgotten. Let me know if anything doesn’t make sense to you.
Thanks,
Carolyn Clark
